Generating Breath in Crowded Spaces: Riverside social housing in Jetisharjo, Yogyakarta

February 20, 2025

The issue raised in this design is the development of housing in Jetisharjo Village, an urban settlement (colloquially known as kampung kota) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The morphology of the village has become increasingly sprawling, even extending towards the Code River. This is due to the high cost of housing in the city, which has become unaffordable for low-income communities, leading the residents to build houses along the riverbank despite violating local regulations.

Hence, this design idea by by I Gusti Lanang Agung Nararya Pangjaya as part of a design studio for Universitas Gadjah Mada aims to provide a sustainable and economical housing solution for the riverside community of Jetisharjo. The buildings are designed as semi-permanent communal housing, which is permitted by local regulations. The main challenges addressed are related to the idea of reducing the sprawl of the riverside settlement, maintaining economic affordability, and the technical challenges of building the design on a site that is difficult to access by construction vehicles.

Given these issues, a multi-level communal housing design was proposed as a solution to reduce sprawling development along the riverbank. Most of the building materials use bamboo with simple techniques to make it environmentally friendly and easy for the community to maintain independently.

In terms of implementation, the buildings are constructed using a prefabricated system in the form of panels to facilitate distribution to the site and provide flexibility for residents to organise their space independently. The prefabricated building system allows for the optimisation of production costs through mass production, ultimately making the housing more affordable.
